PM for doing business with India via Taka, Rupee
MUNICH, Germany, February 17, 2024 (BSS) – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today stressed the need to expand business between Bangladesh and India in their own currencies.
“We can conduct our business by exchanging Bangladeshi taka and Indian rupees. It has already started but we need to expand it further so that we can increase our business,” she said while Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar paid a visit to the Prime Minister.
The meeting took place this morning at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof, the conference venue, here on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference (MSC) 2024.
Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud informed journalists about the outcome after the meeting concluded.
The foreign minister said the Bangladesh Prime Minister and Jaishankar emphasized on conducting business between the two friendly countries through their own currencies to reduce dependence on other currencies such as the US dollar.
He said Bangladesh and India have excellent bilateral relations which have reached new heights under the leadership of the Prime Ministers of both countries.
“Relations between countries are getting closer every day,” he said, adding that the two leaders discussed the issues during the meeting.
Quoting Jaishankar, Hasan said, “Our relations will become even closer in the coming days.”
Bangladesh Ambassador to Germany Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan and Prime Minister's Deputy Press Secretary Noorelahi Mina were present at the briefing.
The Prime Minister of Bangladesh arrived in Munich on the evening of February 15 for a three-day official visit to attend the 2024 Munich Security Conference.
After completing the tour, Sheikh Hasina will leave Munich tomorrow evening and is expected to reach Dhaka on February 19.
