Badminton News: Women’s doubles pair, Pearly Tan/M Thinaah may face a potential upset that could come from Indian representatives Treesa Jolly/Gayathri Gopichand in the semi-finals of the 2022 Commonwealth Games Individual Championships.
Seeded Pearly/Thinaah should be wary of young Indian players who made history by becoming their country’s first pair to reach the All England semi-finals in March.
The 19-year-old, who later made his debut at the prestigious tournament, stunned South Korea’s world number 3 Lee So-hee/Shin Seung-chan in the quarter-finals.
Gayathri is the daughter of Indian national team coach and former England champion Pullela Gopichand.
After All England’s heroics, they failed to maintain their form and were knocked out in the first round of the Swiss Open in March and the Malaysia Masters last month.
But Pearly-Thinaah still couldn’t take them lightly.
However, the Malaysians can rest easy as they got the better of Treesa-Gayathri in their only encounter so far at the Malaysia Masters.
Ahead of their potential clash in the top four individual events, the two pairs could meet in the mixed team final.
If Pearly-Thinaah can handle it again, it could put them in a good position ahead of their eventual individual championships.
For now, Malaysia are focusing on the mixed team event, with the quarter-finals taking place today.
Malaysia booked their place in the last eight after beating Zambia and Jamaica 5-0.
The team is set to reclaim the mixed team title after coming second to India at the 2018 Olympics on Australia’s Gold Coast.
It will be an interesting battle between the two countries for gold as India are determined to defend the title.
“We came here to definitely win the gold. We will set our goals correctly and at the same time not think too much about who we will face in the semi-finals or the final. We are only focused on doing well,” said Indian men’s singles player K. Srikanth told The Times of India.
