Badminton News: Women’s doubles duo Pearly Tan/M.Thinaah kept their hopes alive for their first Commonwealth Games gold when they reached today’s final.
The world number 11 pair became top seeds by beating India’s Treesa Jolly/Gayatri Gopichand Pullela 21-13, 21-16 in the semi-final at the NEC Hall in Birmingham.
Gold favorites Pearly/Thinaah will face world number 14 Chloe Birch/Lauren Smith of England in the final.
Former national badminton player Vivian Hoo and retired Chow Mei Kuan won the women’s doubles title on Australia’s Gold Coast four years ago.
And what better way for Malaysians to do so than to refuse the British pair in front of their own fans at the National Exhibition Center today.
Thinaah, however, admits it will be a tough challenge.
“It won’t be easy for us. We already lost against them, so we have to rest and prepare well. Hopefully this time we can beat them,” Thinaah said.
Yesterday, the Malaysian pair confirmed their top-seeded status by recording a victory over Treesa Jolly-Gayathri Gopichand of India which was their second victory over the young Indians after also beating them in the mixed team final.
If they win, they will become the fifth pair to do so after Ang Li Peng-Lim Pek Siah (2002 Manchester), Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty (2006 Melbourne), Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei (2004 Glasgow) and Lee Meng Yean – Vivian Hoo (2018 Gold Coast)
