Ligasports – Olympic News 2016: Indian men's singles champion at the 2014 Games Parupalli Kashyap says India's fifth-ranked badminton player Saina Nehwal is her country's best choice to win a medal at the Rio Olympics.
“Given Saina’s ranking and her recent performances, she has a good chance of winning a medal in Rio.” Said Parupalli Kashyap, badminton player born on September 8, 1986 in Hyderabad, India, as quoted by badmintonplanet.com.
Kashyap also expressed his excitement for Sumeeth Reddy and Manu Attri, who became the first Indian men's doubles duo to qualify for the Rio Olympics. However, Kashyap supports both men's efforts in Rio.
“I wouldn't say Manu and Sumit are medal contenders because the men's doubles competition is very competitive,” said the 1.73 meter tall man.
Kashyap, whose dreams of qualifying for the Olympics were dashed after he injured his knee while competing in the German Open last March.
“It's unfortunate that the timing of the injury is not right. The injury happened two months ago, I am currently in very good condition and maybe I will be able to play in Rio,” Kashyap said.
Parupalli Kashyap, who is yet to fully recover from the injury he suffered four months ago, told reporters that he would return to competition sometime in September.
“I will probably participate in the GPG Indonesia tournament but I am not sure about my participation in the next two Super Series events because my ranking has gone down due to not playing in the last few months,” he added .
