India has so far won 35 Olympic medals in 25 editions of the Olympic Games.
India has been participating in the Olympic Games for over a century. India won its first medal at the 1900 Paris Olympics in athletics. Since then, the country has won 34 additional medals at the Summer Olympics.
India won its first Olympic gold medal at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics in men's hockey. Twenty years later, the first Olympic gold medal since independence was also won by the men's hockey team.
Abhinav Bindra in Beijing 2008 became India's first individual gold medallist. He won a gold medal in the 10m air rifle shooting event.
The men's hockey team was the country's most successful team at the Summer Games with 12 medals. Field hockey was the only sport to reach double digits in medal count.
In individual events, KD Jadhav won a bronze medal in men's 57 kg freestyle wrestling at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. He was the first athlete to win an individual medal for independent India.
Norman Pritchard had won India's first medal at the 1900 Paris Olympics. He won silver medals in the 200m hurdles and the 200m hurdles. Pritchard is the only athlete to have won multiple medals at a single edition of the Indian Summer Games.
Karnam Malleshwari became the first Indian woman to win a medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. She won a silver medal in the 69 kg weightlifting event.
Only two athletes from the country have won more than one medal in multiple editions of the Summer Olympics. Sushil Kumar is the first athlete to win two medals for the country.
He won a bronze medal in 2008 in Beijing in freestyle wrestling in the 66 kg category and a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics in the same category.
PV Sindhu became the second athlete and the first woman to win two medals for her country at the Summer Olympics. Sindhu won a silver medal in badminton singles at the 2016 Rio Olympics and a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Sindhu, at the age of 21, became the youngest Indian athlete to win a medal for her country at the 2016 Rio Olympics. At the 2004 Athens Olympics, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore became India's oldest Olympic medallist when he won a silver medal in the double shotgun trap event.
Neeraj Chopra is the only Indian to have won a gold medal in athletics. He won a gold medal in the javelin throw at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
