Tennis News: Novak Djokovic once again entertained the crowd at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai, but the three-set victory he secured was not enough to lead the Falcons team to the World League final of tennis.
The tennis player who won 21 Grand Slam titles previously withdrew from his match against Australian Nick Kyrgios of the Eagles, but he was able to return to action once more before being knocked out of the League tennis world.
Former world number 1 Djokovic said he made sure he was feeling good and added: “It’s probably the most enjoyable three or four days in a row I’ve had. I’ve had a long career, but it’s as good as you can imagine.”
“Playing great games against the best players in the world and having fun, having the best male and female players in a tournament, sharing the bench with them, talking about everything with them, it’s really fun.”
In mixed doubles, Team Kites, bolstered by veteran doubles player from India, Sania Mirza, and young Danish tennis player and world number 11, Holger Rune managed to win 6-2, 4-6, 10-5 over Team Falcons, which was bolstered by international tennis player, Spain, Paula Badosa and Bulgarian tennis player, Grigor Dimitrov. The win gave the Kites a 12-8 lead over the Falcons.
In other action, world number 1, Iga Swiatek was not in relaxation mode after snatching a convincing 6-1, 6-3 win over world number 5, Aryna Sabalenka. The win further cemented Team Kites’ advantage over Team Falcons in the World Tennis League.
The two women’s tennis stars have met five times at the WTA tournament in 2022, with Polish international Swiatek winning four of those encounters before Sabalenka won her last encounter at the WTA Finals in Texas last month.
Wimbledon champion for the 2022 season, Djokovic didn’t allow Team Kites to erase victory after beating Austrian tennis player Sebastian Ofner 6-7, 6-0, 13-7. However, the Falcons team is still in last position in the World Tennis League, which is in fourth place with 84 points, 29 points behind the Kites team which is in first position.
Ofner was not originally part of Team Kites earlier this week, but he replaced Felix Auger Aliassime who was originally scheduled to fight Djokovic.
