Tennis News: Novak Djokovic has quit ahead of the 2022 World Tennis League match against Nick Kyrgios in Dubai after saying he didn’t feel so good to compete.
The heated match between Djokovic and Kyrgios – a rematch of the 2022 Wimbledon final – should be one of the things that will catch the public’s attention at the World Tennis League.
“Novak Djokovic said he will not participate in the World Tennis League this time because he does not feel 100% good to play,” the organizers said.
“The Falcons team will continue to play against the Eagles team and we look forward to Novak’s return to the field.
Djokovic was replaced by his Falcons teammate Grigor Dimitrov who managed to secure a 7-6, 6-3 win over Australian tennis player Kyrgios. But the Eagles team managed to win 38-31 over the Falcons team.
“I was pretty excited to come out against Novak, of course, since the Wimbledon final and all that, I wanted to get out there and have fun with him,” Kyrgios admits.
“But he has to take care of his body and of course he will face the next important months with high expectations, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t feel 100 per cent ready to go on the pitch.”
“But Dimitrov is a good friend of mine, it was a pleasure to play against him. Every day I feel better physically. After having two tough singles matches, I feel pretty good, I went through both without worrying, so it’s a bonus.”
The match between the two teams started with a mixed doubles. Experienced Indian veteran Rohan Bopanna and 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu were the winning teams, giving the Eagles an early lead.
Bopanna and Andreescu took 2-6, 7-6, 10-7 victories over Dimitrov and Aryna Sabalenka, but as the number of games won was the most important thing in the format of the competition, the two players gave a advantage to the Eagles with 13-ten.
“It definitely gives a different feel to the sport, which I love. It’s my first time doing an exhibition like this and it’s really nice to have a mixed team competition like this,” Andreescu said.
WTA Finals champion for the 2022 season, Caroline Garcia, made the Eagles team even better after beating Spanish tennis player Paula Badosa 6-4, 6-3.
“It’s a great atmosphere, I really enjoyed the match. It was a valuable experience for us and I’m really happy to have teammates, which is rare in our sport,” Garcia said.
