Jakarta (ANTARA) – Nine Indonesian chess players will compete in the 44th Chess Olympiad 2022, to be held in Chennai, India, from July 26 to August 10, 2022.
Athletes who were selected to represent Indonesia in the most prestigious chess championship included the men’s team GM Susanto Megaranto, GM Novendra Priasmoro, FM Muhamad Agus Kurniawan, IM Mohamad Ervan and IM Yoseph Theolifus Taher.
While the women’s team was represented by WGM Irine Kharisma Sukandar, WGM Medina Warda Aulia, Fariha Mariroh and WIM Dewi Ardhiani Anastasia Citra.
In a written statement quoted on Tuesday, the General Chairman of the Board of the Indonesian Chess Association (PB Percasi), General Manager Utut Adianto, hopes that the athletes can improve the ranking of the Indonesian national chess team. , both in the male and female groups.
As of July 2022, the Indonesian men’s chess team was ranked 57th out of 155 FIDE (International Chess Federation) or World Chess Federation member countries, while the women’s team was ranked 32nd out of 111 countries.
Rankings for each team or country are obtained based on the average standard chess rating of the 10 active players with the highest rating in each male/female group.
The nine athletes who competed were accompanied by team manager Kristianus Liem, men’s team captain Rudijanto Majela, women’s team captain Lisa Lumondong and two coaches, namely Ruslan Scherbakov and Andrei Kovalev, as well as a companion Sean Winshand Cuhendi.
The total Indonesian contingent that left for Chennai this time was 15 people.
As the host of the 2022 Chess Olympics, India is known as the birthplace of many great chess players. One of them is five-time world champion Viswanathan Anan. In fact, India is currently listed as the country with the most chess players.
