Badminton News: After performing on the international stage last year, it’s time for Ng Tze Yong to make an impact on a higher level.
After winning several low-level European tournaments in recent months, the 21-year-old will return to action for the 2022 India Open in New Delhi from January 11-16 and Syed Modi India International in Lucknow from January 18-16. January 23. January.
This is done by BAM in hopes that world number 60, Ng Tze Yong, who is ranked second for the Malaysian national team, can close the gap to world number 7, Lee Zii Jia.
In recent months, the Johor-born player has shown his potential by winning three events namely Polish Open, Belgian International and Scottish Open 2021.
He also performed well when he was part of the squad in the 2021 Thomas Cup and Sudirman Cup finals.
“Last year he did well, especially in the Thomas and Sudirman Cups and winning small events,” BAM coaching director Wong Choong Hann said.
“Tze Yong has been consistent which is why we sent him to India for two events to prepare him to play against higher ranked players. It’s a busy schedule for him but we want to take advantage of the fact that he is currently ranked 60th in the world and qualified to compete in mid-level events,” he said.
“As it’s the start of the year, it’s a good opportunity for him, otherwise he will have to spend another six to nine months competing in lower level events just to increase his ranking.”
“Physically he is fit and that is also his commitment to this goal. He has been training hard without much rest since returning from Europe last month to prepare for this. Given his qualities, we think he has what it takes and it would be nice if he could reach the quarter-finals,” added Choong Hann.
Ng Tze Yong, who is unseeded at the Indian Open, will face seventh seeded Indonesian Tommy Sugiarto in the first round. If he reaches the last eight, he is expected to meet India’s second seed B. Sai Praneeth.
