Badminton News: Ng Tze Yong will get his moment of truth when he takes on Singaporean world champion Loh Kean Yew for the first time in the Commonwealth Games quarter-finals on Saturday (6/8).
The 22-year-old will need to beat the top seed if he is to cap off a superb debut season by adding another medal to the mixed doubles gold he won on Monday.
On paper, Loh Kean Yew should have started as the favorite but the in-form Ng Tze Yong, buoyed by his stunning victory over India’s Kidambi Srikanth in the team final, will once again show that he does not give up easily. .
The world number 42 finished his last 16 hurdles with an easy 21-7, 21-9 victory over Ajfan Rasheed of the Maldives, while Kean Yew prepared for the fight by beating Alexandre Bongout of Maurice 21-13, 21- 10.
Kean Yew struggled to impress during the tag team campaign, losing to India’s Lakhsya Sen in back-to-back matches and forced to deepen his ability to beat world No.54 England’s Toby Penty 25-23, 11-21 and 25-23.
In an interview with the Singapore Straits Times, Kean Yew said: “I fought all the time. It’s just not many people know who I am even at the Olympics, and after becoming world champion, more than people know me and expect me to win all the time, but it doesn’t work that way.”
So, can Ng Tze Yong take advantage of the opportunity? If he beat Kean Yew, he was expected to have a rematch with Srikanth.
In women’s singles, Goh Jin Wei has another chance to exact revenge on India’s PV Sindhu after her loss in the team event.
Jin Wei didn’t need to lift a racket to advance as he was knocked down by Barbados’ Tamisha Williams.
Malaysian double seed – Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yi (men), Pearly Tan/M. Thinaah (women) and Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei King (mixed) also qualified for the quarter-finals.
Aaron/Wooi Yik faced little resistance from the Grimley brothers, Christopher and Matthew of Scotland before winning 21-19, 21-16. They look certain to make it to the last four when they next take on the small side Brian Kasirye/Daniel Wanagaliya of Uganda.
