Badminton News: Indian men’s singles star Lakshya Sen will be a tough test for Ng Tze Yong in the second round of the Indonesia Masters Super 500 tournament today.
Yesterday, the Indian player secured a 21-12, 21-11 win over world number 7 Japan and Malaysian Open runner-up Kodai Naraoka in the first round at Istora Senayan in Jakarta.
It was arguably one of Lakshya Sen’s best performances since his crash towards the second half of last year.
After excelling against Tze Yong in the final of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in August, Lakshya was eliminated in the first rounds of all her tournaments except for the Danish Open in October where she reached the eight last.
The 21-year-old’s disappointing result knocked him out of the top 10 of the latest world rankings and took 12th place.
Lakshya, however, was in his element in his straight win over Naraoka and will be ready to defend his unbeaten streak against world number 28 Tze Yong.
Ng Tze Yong has never beaten the Indian in three games including the Commonwealth Games.
She also lost to Lakshya in the Bangladesh International Challenge 2019 and Indian Open last year.
Tze Yong, however, looked to be in such good shape as he beat Danish world number 34 Hans-Kristian Vittinghus 21-7, 21-14 in his opening match.
Local favorites Anthony Ginting and China’s Shi Yuqi put on an interesting match against each other after ending the respective hopes of Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu and Japan’s Kento Momota.
World No. 2 Ginting beat world No. 16 Cheuk Yiu 21-10, 21-12 while Yuqi (No. 27) beat Momota (No. 19) 21-18, 21-7.
Two-time world champion Momota is yet to win a match at an international tournament this year after also being knocked out in the first round of the recent Indian Open.
