National Sports Day: Overview – India Celebrates National Sports Day

National Sports Day is celebrated every year on 29th August in India.

Dayanchand's birthday is celebrated as National Sports Day to honour his achievements in the field of hockey.
Every country celebrates National Sports Day on different dates. On this day, sports competitions like basketball and sports are held in all schools and colleges and prizes are awarded for them.

Accordingly, the Arjuna Award, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and Durunasaryar Award will be conferred today at the Rashtra Bhavan to honour outstanding athletes. The awards were presented to the athletes by the President of India.

Indian athletes are the top medallists at this year's Asian Games held in Indonesia and have so far won 9 gold medals, 19 silver medals and 22 bronze medals, taking a total of 50 medals.
