Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrapped up a two-day trip to Russia this week. During his visit to Putin’s Novo-Ogaryovo residence, Modi was remarkably friendly. “It’s great to be in the home of friends,” he told reporters. The two leaders embraced warmly and exchanged pleasantries before Putin invited Modi to tour his horse stables.
Modi calls for Indian citizens to be fired
Many Indian men who were initially lured to Russia by the perceived high-paying jobs ended up serving in the Ukrainian War. Some of these men appeared in viral videos begging for help wearing Russian military uniforms. They reported being duped by agents who took them to Russia and then abandoned them.
Modi and Putin discussed the situation over dinner at Putin's residence, reported “News Week“. Modi managed to convince Putin to release all Indian citizens from Russian troops and allow them to return to India. A Kremlin spokesman declined to comment on the details of the deal, saying only: “We do not comment on these issues in any way.”
India's economic gains from the war
Despite Russia's isolation from the West, India has been able to expand its economic ties with Moscow. According to a report from “Time“Indian refineries are one of the main buyers of Russian oil, which can no longer be shipped directly to Europe due to sanctions. India processes this oil and exports some of it to Europe.
Trade between the two countries hit a record high of $65.7 billion last year. However, there are still challenges in the transaction because Indian traders are unwilling to pay for Russian oil in US dollars due to Western sanctions. Modi and Putin discussed how they could facilitate the implementation of the deal, “Zeit” reported.
