Badminton News: A repeat of the final from four years ago will see a strong team from Malaysia meet top seeds India in the best mixed team match of the 2022 Commonwealth Games taking place on Tuesday night (2/ 8) at the National Exhibition Center Birmingham, England.
Chan Peng Soon/Cheah Yee See, Ng Tze Yong, Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik overcame their respective opponents in the 2022 Commonwealth Games Mixed Team Semi-Finals to hand Malaysia a 3-0 win over England on Monday.
Chan/Cheah came out of a set down to beat world number 11 Marcus Ellis/Lauren Smith of England 12-21, 21-18, 21-13 to give Malaysia a 1-0 lead.
World No. 44 Ng Tze Yong then opened a 2-0 lead by breaking world No. 55 Toby Penty of England with 21-13, 21-14.
In the next men’s doubles match, world number 6 Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik sealed the victory for Malaysia by defeating world number 19, Ben Lane/Sean Vendy 21-17 and 21-18.
Malaysia will face India in the mixed team final on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, defending champions India advanced to the final by beating Singapore 3-0 in the other semi-final.
India’s world number 8 men’s doubles duo Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty won the men’s doubles match in back-to-back matches before world number 7 PV SIndhu beat world number 19 Yeo Jia Min 21-11 and 21-12 in the women’s singles match.
India completed the process when world number 10 Lakshya Sen defeated world champion and world number 9 Loh Kean Yew in the men’s singles match 21-18, 21-15.
In the final at the National Exhibition Centre, India, who beat Malaysia 3-1 in the mixed team final of the 2018 Commonwealth Games, have the advantage in men’s singles and women’s singles over Malaysia.
However, if Malaysia can steal a point from India through men’s doubles, Malaysia has a great chance of winning the mixed team gold medal because women’s doubles and mixed doubles are more experienced and stronger than the Indian pairs.
