Badminton News: World No. 4 badminton player in men’s singles Lee Zii Jia struggled at the Japan Open World Tour Super 750 badminton tournament in Osaka, Japan today.
The 2022 Asian champions lost 22-20, 23-21 to Indian Cup hero Thomas Kidambi Srikanth in today’s first round. It was Zii Jia’s first defeat in the first round of the season.
The loss was a blow to Lee Zii Jia, who is looking to redeem himself in Osaka after being knocked out in the last 16 of the prestigious 2022 World Championships last week in Tokyo.
Kisambi Srikanth will then face Wang Tzu Wei from Taiwan or Kanta Tsuneyama from Japan in the second round tomorrow (1/9).
Meanwhile, the women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan/M. Thinaah made a brilliant debut at the Japan Open by defeating world number 2 Shin Sheung Chan-Lee So Hee of South Korea in the first round today.
World No. 11 Pearly-Thinaah defeated Sheung Chan-So Hee, who won silver at last year’s World Championships, 16-21, 21-14 and 21-18 at Maruzen Intec Arena in Osaka .
It was a good response from Pearly/Thinaah after being knocked out of the last 16 at the World Championships in Tokyo last week.
The win against Sheung Chan/So Hee was their second major defeat against the top five pairings, having beaten world number 4 pair Yuki Fukushima/Sayaka Hirota of Japan twice this year.
