Badminton News: If Viktor Axelsen has been spared a winning streak, not with Lee Zii Jia who is still chasing that elusive feeling.
The Malaysian player knows there has been a lot of talk about his form, especially after his first round loss at the Malaysian Open 2023, but he also admits he is still developing. He’s come a long way, but he admits that for a more cohesive performance, some pieces of the puzzle remain unfinished.
“I have to try to find what I can say is the right strategy that works for me, so that I can play with that strategy throughout my career. You can see that Axelsen has found it. That’s why he has a very stable performance,” said Lee ZIi JIa, after going through a tough opening match at YONEX SUNRISE India Open 2023.
But is it one thing or several small things?
“You have a lot to put together. Because of me, I didn’t have a coach, so Daren (Liew) and I had to work on something new and try to come up with a strategy. Different players will have different solutions.”
Being independent meant he would care a lot more about her, Lee ZIi Jia insisted that she would need time.
“I always maintained that after turning professional it would be a tough challenge for me. It may take more than two years to become a better player. I don’t know. But I’m up for the challenge. And like I said, once I decided to turn professional, I was ready for the challenge,” he said.
“First of all, there’s the pressure of expectations from the Malaysian fans at home and around the world, they expect me to be more stable after I turn professional. They expected me perform better. Like I said, it might take me two, three or four years to become a better player because it’s a new challenge as a professional player.”
“Expectations bother me, I have to admit. Right now I’m trying to stay away from all that and keep my focus on badminton,” the 2022 Asian champion concluded.
