Badminton News: Malaysian badminton legend Datuk Lee Chong Wei boosts the badminton team that won Commonwealth Games gold against defending champions India in the team final 2022 Commonwealth Games Mixed Race.
The former world number one, who won several titles throughout his illustrious career, including three Olympic silver medals, said he was blown away by the performances of the young players who showed great maturity and of determination during the competition.
Lee Chong Wei said a 3-1 win over India in Birmingham would be a big boost to the country’s confidence in big games in the years to come.
“Everyone played very well. It’s a good start for a young team. We lost against India four years ago, but we managed to win the title in the second most important match after the Olympics. More importantly, the Bright Path is up and ‘My country’ will be heard,” he said.
In the 2018 edition held in the Gold Coast, Australia, the Malaysian mixed team, which included Chong Wei, unexpectedly lost 1-3 to India.
Chong Wei said choosing Ng Tze Yong as the first singles player to replace Lee Zii Jia was the right decision as he played a very determined game to repay that trust.
“Tze Yong showed aggressive play and was in top form as beating Kidambi Srikanth, the former world number one was not easy…now he has to use his experience and stay focused on challenging others major tournaments,” he said.
“But the fans have to give him space because he can’t win every time. There will be times when the player will lose. We have to understand that badminton players will follow a step-by-step process when participating in tournaments,” added Chong Wei.
In the final against Srikanth, Tze Yong, who is ranked 42nd in the world, beat India 21-19, 6-21 and 21-16 to give Malaysia the second point.
Lee Chong Wei also praised Goh Jin Wei for battling former world No. 1 PV Sindhu before losing 20-22, 17-21.
Malaysia’s first points were won by Tokyo Olympics bronze medalists Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik who beat Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty 21-18, 21-15 in men’s doubles while Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah teamed up to win 21-18 points, 21-17 over Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Puella.
