(LEAD) Golden Globes: ‘Decision to Leave’ Did Not Win Best Non-English Film

SEOUL, Jan. 11 (Yonhap) — Director Park Chan-wook’s film “Decision to Leave” failed to win Best Non-English Language Film at the Golden Globe Awards. The romantic thriller was nominated in this category along with four other films: “All Quiet on The Western Front” (Germany), “Argentina, 1985” (Argentina), “Close” (Belgium) and “RRR” (India).

“Argentina, 1985” by Santiago Miter won honors at the 80th Golden Globe Awards, which took place Tuesday (US time) at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills in Los Angeles.

“Decision to Leave” tells the love story between a police inspector played by South Korean actor Park Hae-il and a woman who allegedly killed her husband, played by Chinese actress Tang Wei.

This is the first time in four years that Korean content or content from Korea has not been awarded a Golden Globe award. In 2020, South Korean director Bong Joon-ho’s dark comedy “Parasite” won this category, previously named Best Foreign Language Film, while Korean-American director Lee Isaac Chung’s semi-autobiographical film “Minari” is the winner of this award in its 2021 edition. Last year, actor O Yeong-su of “Squid Game” received the award for best actor in a supporting role in a series at this prestigious American ceremony.

Even if “The Decision to Go” isn’t appreciated, Park, winner of the Prize for directing at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival with this film, is aiming to win another prize at the 2023 Oscars, after Bong Joon’s victorious “Parasite.” four Oscars in 2020, including Best Picture.

“Decision to Leave” is one of 15 semifinalists eligible to win Best International Feature Film at the 2023 Oscars. Voting to determine the five finalists in each category will take place from January 12-17, 2023. The list of nominees will be announced on January 24. The 95th Academy Awards will take place on March 12 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
