Badminton News: Suffering from a throat infection, Indian badminton star Lakshya Sen has withdrawn from the Australian Open Super 300 badminton tournament next week.

The 21-year-old from Almora caught the infection just before the Hylo Open, where he lost in the first round to Hong Kong’s Ng Ka Long Angus in Saarbrucken, Germany.

The Australian Open is scheduled for November 15-20 in Sydney.

“I had a fever, sore throat and weakness after reaching Saarbrücken before the Hylo Open. I may have caught an infection coming from Paris,” said Lakshya Sen, who returned to India Saturday night, at PTI Sunday.

“I don’t think it’s too bad. I trained last Sunday and last Monday I felt less well. I saw a doctor online and took some medicine. Now it’s under control. But given the circumstances, I have decided to withdraw from the Australian Open.”

The Commonwealth Games champion said the fact he had no chance of making the World Tour final also played a part in his decision to withdraw from the tournament.

“I applied before because I thought it would help me qualify for the World Tour Finals, but now it’s not possible, so I better take a few weeks off, recover fit and start my off season training get ready for the game next season.

It’s been a tough few months for Lakshya Sen, who underwent surgery right after the world championships for a “deviated septum”, a condition that occurs when the thin wall (nasal septum) between the nasal passages shifts from one side.

“I have been suffering from this condition for a few years. I can’t breathe properly on both sides of my nose. One side is completely blocked. Doctors told me it can’t be fixed until after I’m 18 or 20. But with a series of tournaments like the CWG and the World Championships, there was no time, so after the World Championships I decided to have surgery.

All England silver medalist Sen said it was the only window as qualifying for the Paris Olympics would begin next year.

“It took me 3-4 weeks to fully recover. But my immunity went down. The operation went very well. But I couldn’t play 100% all the time,” said the current number eight world.

“I plan to spend time with my family, improve and train for next season. I could play in PBL,” added the Indian Open champion.
