Lakshya Sen reassures Birmingham success

Ligaosport.com –

Badminton News: India’s rising men’s singles star Lakshya Sen is looking to create fonder Birmingham memories as he prepares to make his Commonwealth Games debut in 2022.

The 20-year-old had an impressive All England debut at Birmingham in March, where he beat several top players including Denmark’s world number 3 Anders Antonsen and Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia en route to the final.

He lost to Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen in the title match, but certainly made everyone sit up and watch.

Lakshya Sen wants to have the same impact in the quadrennial championship and has set himself two goals, namely to help the Indian team retain their gold medal in mixed doubles and secure a place on the podium in the individual events. .

India managed to beat Malaysia 3-2 in the final of the last edition of Gold Coast 2018 in Australia.

The world number 10 is confident his side’s stunning victory in the Thomas Cup final in May can help them reclaim Commonwealth Games gold.

“I’m sure we can repeat the success of the last edition if we really stick together as a team like we did in the Thomas Cup. We have a strong team and we can certainly defend the title in the ‘mixed team event,” Lakshya told Asian News International.

And the 20-year-old expects another fierce battle with his Malaysian rivals.

“Although we are confident, we have to know that Malaysia are also a very good team. We need to perform to our full potential to repeat our last dream performance. It will be a good match against Malaysia,” Lakshya said.

Lakshya Sen will first play in singles but if he is in bad shape, India can count on their reliable senior Kidambi Srikanth (n°11). They also have world number 8 Satwiksairaj Ranki-reddy-Chirag Shetty in men’s doubles, although both have calmed down somewhat after a sensational Thomas Cup win. They will also rely on women’s singles star PV Sindhu to seal a point.

On an individual level, Lakhsya admits she faces stiff competition with the likes of Srikanth and Singaporean world champion Loh Kean Yew in the fight.

“I have to be at my best because I’m going to face tough competitors like Srikanth and Kean Yew. I am ready to fight to finish on the podium,” said Lakhsya.

In the absence of Lee Zii Jia, Malaysia’s sole representative, Ng Tze Yong, has the daunting task of ruffling his singles competitors.

The group stage of the mixed team competition kicks off tomorrow at the National Exhibition Center in Birmingham, England.
