Badminton News: Indian badminton player Lakshya Sen has said that the Ministry of Sports’ Target Olympic Podium Program (TOPS) is playing an important role in the Commonwealth Games 2022 (CWG 2022) gold medal campaign.

Standing in gold medal glory, Lakshya Sen says his recovery from a shoulder problem was made possible by the support of TOPS to engage the services of physiotherapist Heath Mathews. The Commonwealth gold medalist will have to retire from several international tournaments before CWG 2022.

The Indian said he missed several tournaments in Malaysia to give himself time to recover from the shoulder problem that plagued him and prepare for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Lakshya told the Sports Authority of India:

“Through the Target Olympic Podium program, I was able to benefit from the extensive experience of physiotherapist Heath Mathews before and during the Olympics. His expertise helped me get back in shape in time to train for CWG 2022. I am grateful that TOPS also made it possible for Heath Mathews to travel to Birmingham to be with me.

The young badminton star said the rest he took ahead of CWG 2022 also helped him regain his fitness level and hopes to continue his good work at the World Championships.

He continued: “I also think it helps me take a break from competing to try and get back into the physical shape I need. I hope to be able to continue this form at the World Championships.

Youth Ministry Olympic Mission covered all of Heath Mathews’ commitment costs for a week in Bengaluru from July 17 and for 16 days in Birmingham to assist in the recovery of Lakshya Sen.

Speaking about the experience of winning a Commonwealth gold medal, the Almora-born commuter said:

“It was great to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in my first senior multi-sport event. I have a lot to learn from the championship. It was an amazing experience. The team atmosphere is great. We formed a brotherhood and did well in the Tag Team Championship.”
