Badminton News: India’s number one badminton player Lakshya Sen, his family and former national coach Vimal Kumar have been charged with age fraud and cheating in an FIR filed in Bengaluru.
The FIR, filed Thursday by Ms Goviappa Nagaraja, alleges the 21-year-old defending Commonwealth Games champion, along with his brother Chirag Sen, falsified their ages to compete in age-group tournaments since 2010.
The complaint, a copy of which is in the possession of PTI, also mentions Sports Authority of India coach father Sen Dhirendra, mothers Nirmala and Kumar, who have coached the pair for over 10 years.
They were charged with fraud (Section 420), forgery (468), using false documents as genuine (471) and acts committed by several persons with the same intent (34) under the Indian Penal Code.
The Sen brothers, who hail from Uttarakhand, train under Kumar at the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy in Bengaluru, while the reporter runs another academy in the metropolis.
The whistleblower accuses Kumar of colluding with Lakshya’s parents to falsify his birth certificate in 2010. If the allegations are true, the Indian star, who recently received the Arjuna award, will have to give up several of his folders.
Firmly denying the allegations, Kumar told PTI: “It is very upsetting. It’s cheap stuff. Lakshya Sen did well and resumed training after the break. It’s very mentally disturbing. »
Currently on No. Wednesday, World No. 6 Lakshya Sen received the Arjuna Award at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He won bronze at the World Championships after losing to fellow countryman Kidambi Srikanth in 2021.
He was also an English Championship runner-up and played a key role in India’s historic Thomas Cup victory earlier this year.
Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy head coach Kumar further said in a statement that the accusations were “baseless, reckless and made with malicious intent”.
“As all badminton lovers know, age verification is the sole prerogative and responsibility of the Badminton Association of India, which is the sole governing authority to administer the game in India,” he said.
“All players, regardless of where they train, represent their respective state unit or affiliate country when participating in a national or international tournament.”
“My goal in my 30 years as a coach has always been to prepare our promising youngsters to the best of my ability to bring victory to our country based on their achievements. Therefore, I deny all these false accusations against me. I don’t want to comment further on that,” he added.
According to the complaint, Lakshya Sen is 24 years old, while his date of birth (August 16, 2001) registered with the Badminton Association of India makes him three years younger.
His older brother Chirag, meanwhile, is said to be 26 years old, although his BAI identity card lists him as 24 (22 July 1998).
According to the complaint, Lakshya Sen barred some children from accessing quality badminton facilities and sponsorship by participating in several tournaments in the age group category.
The plaintiffs further alleged that their families and the coach harmed many talented and promising players in the region and demanded legal action against the five.
Lakshya and his family have yet to comment on the matter.
