The Justice League is still stranded. But not because of the showdown this time around: Superman and his friends fell stronger than them. This is not Lex Luthor, Superman’s nemesis, but the creation of the notorious villain: Lulu. A hairless guinea pig spiked with orange kryptonite. Which gives power, as opposed to the green kryptonite that annihilated Superman. Lulu, very, very evil as her name suggests, wants to conquer the world.
The first step in this friendly cartoon: get rid of Superman and his dog Krypto (“Superdog” or “Bark Kent” for comics connoisseurs) with green kryptonite. Except that Krypto hasn’t said his last word yet. Even without the power, it’s up to him to learn to rely on a team of beasts that escaped from the pet shop, also affected by the orange kryptonite. Strange cattle will discover impossible powers, like a myopic tortoise endowed with the super speed of Flash.
Paid casting for French dubber
And then it’s a chance to see Batman – the real one, not the dog version – lose to an army of guinea pigs. If “Krypto and the super-animals”, signed by the “Lego Batman” screenwriter, is also not the assumed meta-comedy, the tone of the French adaptation is wildly loose, punctuated with visual gags, for example in newspaper headlines that will make the biggest laughs.
Reflecting the US’s five-star cast – which brings together Dwayne Johnson, John Krasinski, Keanu Reeves, among others – the French dub choice may seem surprising. But pay. Muriel Robin is excellent in his role as the evil guinea pig and definitely steals the attention of the Krypto translators. Rapper Soprano brings a bright twist to the character Chip the Squirrel. Denis Brogniart as Lex Luthor is less obvious. It’s hard to believe one of DC’s most charismatic villains when he appears to be hosting Koh-Lanta’s board… And most importantly, even as the voice of Donald Reignoux, the usual French voice actor… Lex Luthor only plays the role of a little hamster in the film.
