Kevin Sanjaya bluntly: I don’t want to be coached by Herry IP anymore

Ligaosport.com –

Badminton News: In an interview with CNN Indonesia, former men’s doubles world number one Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo revealed his strained relationship with legendary Indonesian men’s doubles coach Herry Iman Pierngadi.

CNN: How did the dispute between you and Herry IP start?

“Since I joined the national team, I felt like I was being ignored by him. One of the incidents happened during the run to the 2016 Olympics, I was not sent to the two European tournaments and the China Open. We (with Marcus Gideon) finished not far from Angga/Ricky, only 1-2 places behind, but still in the top 15.”

“I wasn’t sent off because he thinks my standards are still lower than other top pairs. That’s the point. He always underestimated us. I’m with Sinyo (Marcus Gideon). Because we are small, we are underestimated,” he said.

“At that time I practiced more with Koh Ar (Aryono Miranat) whereas before I trained with Mas Chafidz (Yusuf).

CNN: So what was your relationship with Herry IP when you won the 2017 All England and started dominating the World Tour?

Kevin Sanjaya: “That’s when he became our coach. He had never seen us as such a strong couple before.

CNN: Does that mean your relationship with him has been bad for a long time?

“He’s a head coach I respect, but there’s not really a strong relationship between us. We haven’t said a word about bad things. But why talk to the media?

Kevin also said that Herry IP asked him and Gideon to lose to Angga Pratama/Ricky Karanda Suwardi in the Indian Open 2016 Final.

“Herry likes taller players who have big strength, and yes, we are not at the top of the list because Sinyo and I are shorter. When we reached the final of Indian Open 2016, it was my first Super Series final, I was almost persuaded by Herry to give up the match but we didn’t want to.”

“We were asked to give it to Angga/Ricky, but we didn’t want to. At that time, Aryono Miranat (Indonesian men’s doubles assistant coach), Sinyo and Angga/Ricky came together, even Angga/Ricky also asked us to play seriously in the final,” he said.

“Sinyo and I don’t want to give up. Aryono also has no problem if we play seriously. But Herry asked us to give up in the final.”

Markus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo eventually beat Angga Pratama/Ricky Karanda Suwardi 21-17 and 21-13 to win the 2016 India Open Super Series title.

Kevin also stated that he no longer wanted to work together under the care of Herry IP.

“I think I can’t anymore. I mean, I don’t mind even if he doesn’t apologize, I’m fine. But if you ask me to work together again, like to train with him again , I don’t think I can do it. I’ve thought it through and it’s my final decision,” he said.

“Beyond badminton, I have no problem with him, it’s just that we can’t work together in badminton anymore.”

The 27-year-old men’s doubles star also admitted that he took the matter to the All-Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) and is now awaiting a decision from the association.

Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo/Marcus Fernaldi Gideon are the second seeds of the upcoming Danish Open and will face Akira Koga/Taichi Saito of Japan who were not seeded in the first round.
