Badminton News: The Nippon Badminton Association (NBA) announced on Friday that badminton star, Kento Momota, currently ranked 16th in the world, will not take part in the Malaysia Open 2023 World Tour Super 1000 tournament which is due to start at Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from January 10 to January 15, 2023, where the former world number one has been suffering from flu-like symptoms for a few days
However, Kento Momota, who won the 2022 All Japan Championships late last year, is confirmed to compete in the India Open Super 750 to be held in New Delhi from January 17-22.
The Nippon Badminton Association hasn’t said anything about Momota’s participation in the Indonesia Masters 2023 (January 24 to January 29), but his name is still visible in the Indonesia Masters draw.
Daren Liew of Malaysia will take the spot vacated by Momota at the Malaysian Open 2023 and meet rising star Toma Junior Popov of France in the first round.
Meanwhile, Japan’s two-time Women’s Doubles World Champion (2018, 2019) Mayu Matsumoto / Wakana Nagahara had to withdraw from the first three tournaments this year (Malaysia Open, India Open and Indonesia Masters) due to the injury to the Nagahara leg.
The Malaysian Open 2023 has been upgraded from the BWF World Tour Super 750 level to a Super 1000 tournament. This makes the competition offer very large prize money with a total prize pool of USD 1,250,000 or around Rs 19 billion.
