Badminton News: Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwan who reclaimed the world No. 1 this week, beating best friend and world No. 8 Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand 21-19 and 21-18 in the Japan Open tournament on Friday.
The match was the 32nd bout between the two, breaking the record for the most head-to-head matches ever contested between two opponents in women’s singles.
The previous record was held by Indonesian Susi Susanti and Chinese Ye Zhao Ying for a total of 31 matches.
In the quarterfinals, Tai Tzu Ying and Intanon shared a very similar style of play in terms of attacking and deceiving shooting. But, Tai ended up coming away with a win and would meet Korea’s An Se Young in the semi-finals.
The other women’s singles semi-final will be a rematch of last week’s World Championships final with world champion Akane Yamaguchi of Japan taking on Chen Yufei of China for a ticket to the 2022 Japan Open final. .
In men’s singles, world number 6 Chou Tien Chen of Taiwan survived a huge shock against world number 18 HS Prannoy of India before beating India 21-17, 15-21 and 22-20 in 80 minutes . Chou will face world number 22 Shi Yuqi of China in the semifinals.
Anders Antonsen of Denmark will face Kenta Nishimoto of Japan in the other men’s singles semifinal.
Saturday’s men’s doubles semi-final between China’s Liang Wei Keng/Wang Chang and Korea’s Choi Sol Gyu/Kim Won Ho will be an interesting display of the best attack.
