Is the pineapple diet effective for weight loss?

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Losing weight takes a lot of patience, hard work and dedication. However, many people choose the instant way to lose weight but in a short time with fad diets which can cause many long term health issues. Such a scheme is pineapple diet.

Rachna Agarwal, a nutritionist in India, says the pineapple diet means people eat just one fruit, pineapple, throughout the day. Since pineapple is high in sugar, it can be stored easily all day and there is no quantity limit.

However, he added that diet this, ideally, is only done for two days. “If done for a long time, it will pose health risks such as impaired bowel function, which can lead to irritable bowl syndrome and malnutrition because there are no minerals and nutrients,” he told indianexpress.com.

He called it a fad diet. This is usually done during a plateau or when the weight no longer decreases despite diet and exercise. This diet is said to promote weight loss or detoxification of the body. “If done wisely once in a while, it is not harmful but should not be done for a long time,” says Agarwal.

He explained that the weight loss resulting from this diet is temporary, so one can practice such a diet only after proper consultation.

Lovneet Batra, nutritionist, mentions some of the important side effects of the diet.

-Hungry, irritable, and tired because pineapple is so sour it can upset your stomach, especially if that’s all you eat all day. There may be nausea or diarrhea.
-Side effects such as dizziness, fainting, headache, feeling hungry, insomnia, weakness, and extreme hunger are common because pineapple contains less than one gram of protein and fat per cup. The lack of many vitamins and minerals causes the body to lack nutrients.
– Very large amounts of bromelain (an enzyme found in pineapples) can cause skin rashes, vomiting, diarrhea and excessive menstrual bleeding.

Thus, Batra advised against the need to follow strict diet, like the pineapple diet, everything to lose weight. “To lose weight, it’s best to create a small calorie deficit by cutting out or reducing your intake of sugary drinks and ultra-processed foods,” she explains.
