International Relations – Indian Prime Minister Modi meets Putin – Politics

Moscow/New Delhi (dpa) – For the first time since the start of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin. One of the topics of discussion was the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “We are trying to play a role that supports a peaceful and stable region,” Modi said. He hoped to discuss all aspects of bilateral cooperation with his “friend” Putin. A banquet with Putin was planned for that evening.

A spokesman for the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi said earlier that the return of Indians from the war against Ukraine would also be discussed. They were duped into working in the Russian army under false pretenses. There are estimated to be between 30 and 45 Indian nationals.

Moscow media have reported in recent days that Modi’s post-re-election trip is a sign of special respect for India’s ties with Russia. Russian raw materials are a vital energy supplier to India. With revenues from the sale of Russian oil, which India receives at a discount given the Western embargo on Moscow, Putin can also continue to finance his war of aggression against Ukraine.

Next trip to Vienna planned

India has been neutral in Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. It has good relations with the West and Russia, where Modi last visited in 2019. In the fall, Russia will also host a summit of the Brics nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa and other member states) in the city of Kazan, to which Modi has also been invited.

After his visit to Russia, Modi will travel to Austria. It is the first time in more than 40 years that an Indian prime minister has visited the country. Modi will be received by President Alexander van der Bellen and Chancellor Karl Nehammer. In Moscow and Vienna, as with other foreign visits, Modi will meet representatives of the Indian community, he said.
