JAKARTA: India’s Lakshya Sen qualified for the Indonesia Masters Super 500 men’s singles quarter-finals on Thursday while Saina Nehwal was eliminated in the second round of the women’s singles.
Seventh-seeded Lakshya came back from late to win 19-21, 21-8, 21-17 over Malaysia’s NJ Tze Yong in the round of 16 of the Commonwealth Games final.
Both players were tied at the start of the exchange and tied at 13 all in the opener before Malaysia rallied and won the opener. But Lakshya bounced back and dominated the second game.
The game was even closer as the Indian needed to win the last three points in a row to confirm his place in the top eight.
In the quarterfinals, Lakshya will face Indonesia’s fourth seed Jonathan Christie. This will be the duo’s second encounter and first since the knockout stage of the 2020 Asian Badminton Championships, where the Indian emerged victorious in grueling straight sets.
On the other hand, Saina was knocked out in the second round after losing 15-21, 7-21 to eighth seed China Yue Han.
