India's merchandise exports rose 2.56 percent to $35.2 billion in June from $34.32 billion in the same month last year, according to government data released on Monday. Imports rose about 5 percent to $56.18 billion in June from $53.51 billion a year earlier.
The trade deficit, i.e. the gap between imports and exports, amounted to 20.98 billion US dollars in the reporting month.
Briefing the media about the data, Commerce Minister Sunil Barthwal said that the country's total exports of goods and services could cross the $800 billion mark this fiscal year on the current trend.

In the first quarter of 2024-25, exports of goods and services would have been about $200 billion, he added.
India's merchandise exports rose 9.1 percent to $38.13 billion in May, even as the trade deficit widened to a seven-month high of $23.78 billion. Exports rose 5.84 percent to $109.96 billion and imports rose 7.6 percent to $172.23 billion during April-June this year.
