India’s coal production up 17% from April to November

The country’s coal production rose 17 percent to 524.20 million tons in the April-November current budget period.

India’s coal production was 447.54 million tons in the same period last year.

To increase coal production capacity, the government has auctioned 141 new coal blocks for commercial mines and regularly works with various coal companies in the country and monitors their production, the coal ministry said in a statement.

Extensive efforts to improve domestic coal production and handling have shown very good results.

India is the third largest energy consuming nation in the world and electricity demand is growing at around 4.7 percent annually.

Coal production by captive and non-captive companies increased 33.41 percent to 71.07 million tonnes in the April-November period compared to 53.27 million tonnes produced in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year.

The Ministry of Coal is taking steps to improve rail link infrastructure for all major mines under PM Gati Shakti for faster transportation. As a result, total coal shipments for the April-November period were 557.95 million tons, a 7.45 percent growth.
