Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat reportedly faints after being brutally disqualified Paris 2024 Olympic Games before the final match.
Vinesh Phogat's dream of winning an Olympic medal is in sight after she reached the final round of the women's 50kg freestyle wrestling class at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Tuesday (6/8). On the day, Phogat won three bouts.
However, Phogat's hopes of winning an Olympic medal were dashed after she failed to weigh in ahead of the final against American Sarah Hilderbrandt on Wednesday (7/8).
Before his weigh-in, the 29-year-old wrestler was 2 kilos overweight. The weight was excessive because Phogat needed to recharge after three fights in one day.
Overnight, Phogat tried to lose weight until he reached his ideal weight by jumping and exercising all night.
But it was unfortunate for Phogat. When he weighed in, he was 100 grams over the ideal limit allowed. Quoted by Sportbible, Phogat also had to be disqualified. The minimum silver medal he held must also be revoked.
According to a report by India Today, Vinesh Phogat fainted moments after being disqualified and was hospitalised due to suspected dehydration.
The Indian Olympic Committee regrets the decision to disqualify Phogat. They have also requested that Phogat's privacy be respected.
“It is with great regret that the Indian contingent conveys the news of disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the women's 50kg wrestling class,” the Indian Olympic Committee said.
“Despite the team's hard work throughout the night, their weight increased by a few grams to over 50 kg this morning. No further comment will be made by the contingent at this time,” the Indian committee added.
