Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Prime Minister’s Party Narendra Modithe Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), lost the election for the local governing body of Delhi region (MCD).
Based on the results of the vote count, the BJP lost to India’s opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the local elections.
The Independents reported that the AAP passed the threshold with gains in 125 of 250 districts.
Meanwhile, the BJP only won seats in 103 constituencies, although since 2007 the party has always controlled the MCD.
This victory left the AAP in control of the state assembly and municipal bodies.
AAP member Arvind Kejriwal was elected Chief Minister of the Union Territory. He thanked the people of Delhi for voting for his party.
“Thank you to the people of Delhi for this great victory and congratulations to all. Now we must all together make Delhi clean and beautiful,” Kejriwal said on Twitter.
Ahead of the election, the two launched a campaign to tackle each other.
The AAP has so far focused on anti-incumbency or anti-incumbency. They also accused the BJP of failing to deliver on its promises and failing to keep roads clean and properly manage waste.
Meanwhile, the BJP is trying to prove that the AAP has failed to implement the main anti-corruption agenda within its party.
Before the election, a series of videos circulated on social networks. The footage shows a Delhi AAP minister, Satyendar Jain, being massaged in a jail cell.
Jain has been in jail for months for money laundering.
The BJP used the video to prove its charges against AAP. However, the election of the MCD shows that the AAP is still capable of overthrowing the BJP.
