Indian journalists’ group urges government to reject news control proposal

NEW DELHI, KOMPAS.com – A leading group of Indian journalists is urging the government to reject a proposal to control fake news on social media.

They said changes to the country’s information technology rules would amount to censorship.

reported from Reutersthe proposal would ban social media platforms from hosting any information that authorities identify as false.

It is the latest in a series of actions by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government that are seen as attempts to rein in big tech companies.

News found to be false by the Press Information Bureau of India or any other government-authorized fact-checking body will be prohibited under the draft amendment released on Tuesday (17/1/2023).

The government will hold stakeholder consultations to discuss the changes on January 24, and will also invite comments from stakeholders and the general public until January 25.

The Editors Guild of India, in a statement on Wednesday evening (18/1/2023), urged the government to drop the proposal.

They will launch meaningful consultations with stakeholders on the digital media regulatory framework.
