India tests AI as information distributor, seems flexible but monotonous

KOMPAS.com – Artificial intelligence, also called Artificial Intelligence (AI), is currently popular in various countries. In India, AI is used to create anchors or news anchors.

The AI-powered news anchor is Lisa. Lisa looked quite flexible in front of the television, reading the latest news.

Lisa first shared the news last April. So, Lisa is now used as a news anchor on a local Indian channel called Odisha TV (OTV).

“Lisa will be a great partner. (She) does repetitive work and data analysis, so journalists can focus on new angles and more creative work,” said Jagi Mangat Panda, general director of OTV.

In the video shared by the OTV news channel on Twitter, with the account @otvnews, Lisa, who appears in human form, seems flexible enough to announce the information. At first glance, people wouldn’t think Lisa is a product of AI.

However, if you look closely, Lisa’s behavior is actually still not as flexible as that of a human news anchor.

Some of his mouth movements are a bit jerky, not as fast as the audio. The tone Lisa uses is also less flexible, especially for words that require emphasis.

Aside from that, his hand movements also seem quite monotonous as the variety of movements is limited and repetitive throughout the duration of the newsreel.

The video uploaded to Twitter also indicates that the news was relayed by Lisa. However, OTV did not explain that the announcer was not a human, but an AI-based robot that looked like a human.

Despite these flaws, Lisa can be used by media that broadcasts 24 hours a day, such as those often broadcast in offices, cafes or hospital rooms, compiled by KompasTekno of Business Insider, Saturday (7/29/2023) .

It is unclear whether the use of Lisa has the effect of reducing the position of others in the local media or simply to allow the company to save operational costs.

Not only in India, AI-based news broadcasters have also been used in a number of countries including Indonesia, Taiwan, Kuwait, Malaysia and China.

Kompas.com also created news content using AI presenters. In the video below, there is an AI presenter who can speak and present information like a real human.

Such technology can be created using the D-ID platform. For your information, D-ID is a platform with a talking AI character video creation feature.

To make videos of speaking AI characters, D-ID is equipped with various programs. These programs include, among others, the facial animation deep learning program, the text-to-audio processing program, the GPT-3 text data processing program, and the Stable Diffusion text-to-image processing program.

Through the programs built into D-ID, users can create images of certain characters speaking and making sounds based on the written text.
