In the Himalayan valley of Kashmir, under the first snow of winter, security forces were strengthened this Monday, December 11, while local opposition figures are under house arrest. Steps following the announcement of a firm verdict from the Supreme Court of India this morning.
After sixteen days of hearings, the judges approved the repeal of Kashmir’s autonomy, imposed abruptly in 2019 by Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist government. Kashmir, the only region in India where the majority of the population is Muslim, was later stripped of its special status guaranteed by the Constitution. A maneuver that was opposed by parts of civil society and taken to court.
