Badminton News: Women's doubles pair Pearly Tan/M Thinaah proved their first-round elimination at last week's Malaysia Open was just a small mistake after advancing to the quarter-finals of the Indian Open in New Delhi.
World No. 8 Pearly/Thinaah needed a good result at the Indian Open and they took advantage of a good draw to beat Taiwan's Lee Chia-hsin/Teng Chun-hsun 21-14, 16 -21 and 21-6 in an hour of round clashes yesterday.
Reaching the round of 16 will ease the pain of shock defeat to Bulgarians Gabriela Stoeva/Stefani Stoeva in the first round of the 2023 Malaysia Open.
National doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky said the result would help them regain their confidence.
“The result is good for them to get their confidence back. “They lost a match but came back strong in the third set to advance to the quarterfinals,” Rexy said.
Pearly/Thinaah started well but lost their momentum in the second game to allow the Taiwanese pair to advance to the decider.
However, they played aggressively and got 10 points while leading 11-6 to win 21-6 and comfortably secure their place in the last eight.
“I like to go down, for me it’s something natural during a match. The Chinese pair who recently won the Malaysian Open also lost the first match to the Thai pair, but the main thing was how they could recover and control the match. “Pearly-Thinaah managed to come back strong in the third game,” Rexy said.
The Chinese pair mentioned by Rexy was world number 1 Chen Qingchen/Jia Yifan, who played against world number 24 Thai pair Supissara Paewsampran/Puttita Supajirakul and lost the first match before winning 16-21, 21-14, 21 -16.
Pearly-Thinaah have a chance to extend their run by meeting Japan's Rin Iwanaga/Kie Nakanishi, who beat third seed Kim So-yeong-Kong Hee-yong 21-18, 21-19, in the quarterfinals of today.
