Badminton News: It was a narrow victory for the Minions on Thursday night as they saved match point to reach the quarter-finals of the YONEX SUNRISE India Open World Tour Super 750.
The former world No. 1 pair, currently in 19th place, struggled against young Chinese pair Ren Xiang Yu/Tan Qiang, but managed to hold them 23-21 in the third game.
“We were lucky, they played very well. It was a very difficult match for us, they attacked and defended well, and it was very difficult for us to get past their defence,” said Marcus Fernaldi Gideon .
After undergoing surgery on both ankles last April and then struggling to find the form that defined the duo’s success, Gideon said he is looking forward to dominating the Championships once again.
“It’s much better than last year. I had surgery last year and the recovery was not as quick as I hoped. But we are trying to get back on track and do our best. We want to win again and we want to get back to where we were before,” Gideon said.
The Minions now sit fifth in Indonesia in 19th place, but Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo says the drop in the rankings hasn’t affected their performance.
“We don’t think about rankings, we just give our best in every game. Hopefully we can get into the top 8 again,” he said.
“Men’s doubles has become very competitive. Every pair in the top 30 can fight. It forces us to try to improve every day, and to always improve in every game. This (level) is very good for competition,” added Kevin.
