India hopes to strengthen cooperation with ASEAN

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indian Ambassador to ASEAN Jayant Khobragade hopes India-ASEAN cooperation can be further intensified after in November 2022, ASEAN-India relations reach the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership. The chairmanship of ASEAN this year is held by Indonesia.

According to Khobragade, India and ASEAN member countries have the same orientation, they are both developing countries. Thus, it is important that India, Indonesia and ASEAN work together, including within the framework of the G20.

“Relations between ASEAN and India are already at the level global strategic partnership, where it should be an opportunity to offer each other opportunities in many sectors ranging from cybersecurity, digital economy, connectivity, people-to-people contacts and other fields. We want to expand the partnership,” Khobragade said Thursday, January 12, 2023 in Jakarta.

Last year, ASEAN and India celebrated 30 years of friendship. Throughout 2022, many activities were carried out during this celebration, starting with a special meeting between ASEAN foreign ministers and India, the visit of ASEAN MPs to India and technology exhibitions in the start-up sector.

Meanwhile, in February 2023, it is planned that a youth summit will be held in India. The event will bring together hundreds of young people from across ASEAN to interact with 50 young Indians to discuss a number of topics.

The series of events is expected to create understanding between the people of India and ASEAN

Another important aspect is ASEAN perspectives on the Indo-Pacific. The Pacific region has become an important region in the world politically and economically strategic, even its slogan is the epicenter of economic growth. Ambassador Khobragade also assured that India is willing to have collaboration in this area.

The value of India-ASEAN trade in fiscal year 2022 exceeds hundreds of billions of dollars. About 20% of Indian production is destined for ASEAN countries.

In the tourism sector, up to 18% of Indian tourists have picnics in other countries ASEAN, where the three tourist countries most targeted by Indian tourists are Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Not only that, it is recorded that 18% of the Indian Diaspora live in ASEAN member countries.
