“The issue of Rohingya has been discussed. This is an issue that India and Bangladesh have discussed regularly at various levels of interaction… India has offered assistance to Bangladesh… Humanitarian assistance to the Rohingya is something we have offered in the past. We continue to work closely with Bangladesh in this regard,” Kwatra said in a press conference today.

Kwatra also pointed out that Bangladesh faces several challenges regarding the Rohingya.

“Some of them also concern us. Therefore, these challenges are also being discussed. So all of this forms the spectrum of these discussions and some of the key elements of this spectrum were also discussed today between the two heads of state…” added the Foreign Minister.

India had opened its borders to over 10 million people from Bangladesh in the early 1970s to escape the brutality of the Pakistani forces. India was not a signatory to any international agreement, but the government in New Delhi helped these refugees to settle in the country and provided financial support.

These issues were discussed today during bilateral talks between Prime Minister Modi and his Bangladeshi counterpart Hasina.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is on a two-day state visit to India from June 21 to 22. She is the first foreign guest on a bilateral state visit to India since the formation of the Modi 3.0 government.
