The Indian team finally gave their fans something to cheer for as they beat Japan 8-0 in the 9-16th classification match at the Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Rourkela, Odisha. India had pulled out of the medal fight after losing 5-4 on penalties to New Zealand in their crossover match.
For India, Harmanpreet Singh and Abhishek scored two goals while Mandeep Singh, Manpreet Singh, Sukhjeet Singh and Vivek Sagar Prasad scored one goal each. The Japanese failed to score. India would now face South Africa on January 28, 2023 in ranks 9-10.
