Hyundai Collaborates with PLN to Create Renewable Energy Certificates

Jakarta, Gizmology – Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (HMMI) and the State Electricity Company (PLN) today signed an agreement to obtain a Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) at the HMMI plant. This is done with the aim of achieving carbon neutrality and the RE100 (100% Renewable Energy) program.

The signing ceremony of this agreement was held at HMMI Mobility Innovation Center in Bekasi by HMMI Chairman Choi Yoon-seok and PLN UP3 Director Cikarang Zamzami. This agreement aims to provide the REC as a form of realization of the property rights on the environmental benefits of new renewable energies (EBT) which produce electrical energy.

Previously, in 2021, HMMI had installed 3.2 megawatts (MW) and had converted approximately 5% of its total electricity consumption to renewable energy through a photovoltaic power generation system. In order to achieve RE100 by 2023, HMMI will implement REC which represents the environmental attributes of one megawatt-hour (MWh) energy production produced by renewable sources.

“Therefore, from January 1, 2023, 100% of the electricity at the HMMI factory will come from renewable energy sources and our products will be produced with 100% renewable energy. HMMI Chairman Choi Yoon-seok said in his statement on Friday (23/12/2022).

HMMI has also installed a solar power plant for the first time in Indonesia to create some of its energy. By regulating geothermal energy, HMMI completed an environmentally friendly production value chain last March, from the production process to the final product.

The geothermal power plant (PLTP) is an eco-friendly energy that converts heat from the earth into electricity, and the HMMI plant will produce 100% eco-friendly energy vehicles by receiving energy from the Kamojang PLTP located in Bandung, West Java.

PLTP Kamojang consists of three power plants with a combined capacity of 140 MW. The steam produced at a depth of 500 to 2000 m is used to drive turbines. Since July 2021, four Hyundai Motor Group companies, Hyundai Motor, Kia, Hyundai Mobis and Hyundai Wia, have announced their participation in the RE100 and received final approval from the Korea RE100 Committee in April this year.
