Badminton News: Indian senior men’s singles badminton player HS Prannoy reached his first final in over a year but was in no mood to celebrate.
The Indian player is still in shock after watching his Indonesian opponent Christian Adinata retire as he led 17-19 in the last four at Axiata Arena yesterday.
Christian Adinata fell awkwardly and appeared to pull his hamstrings and was forced out of the match.
“It’s absolutely not how I wanted to get to the final,” said Prannoy, who made his first final appearance since finishing second at the Swiss Open last year.
“I’m someone who’s had a lot of injuries and I know how hard it is to come back every time.”
It was a sad end for world No. 57 Christian Adinata after the 21-year-old escaped qualifying to reach the last four of his maiden World Tour Super 500.
The young Indonesian player has been in good form as he won gold at the SEA Games in Cambodia before this tournament.
“It’s sad to see someone who has played the best badminton of his career get injured,” Prannoy said.
“It’s really not easy to play in qualifying and reach the semi-finals. I’m sure he’ll be back soon. It’s going to take some time for me to get into it too,” Prannoy added.
World number 9 HS Prannoy will next face Chinese world number 34 Weng Hongyang for today’s title.
On whether he will have an advantage in the final after playing a shorter game in the top four, HS Prannoy said: “It might give me the advantage, but I have three very long games there.
“When it comes to the World Tour Super 500 and 750, it’s important to be fresh every game. I could be better tomorrow (today).”
