Fight pirates, dig wells, hunt down the Taliban: The Bundeswehr can do a lot today, but not for long. How the armed forces should be formed.

We love our life as we are used to it. We travel the world, meet people from all continents. We can say what we think, we take to the streets: against global warming or for equality; fearless, carefree and without the risk of being mistreated or disappearing. We love our life, in freedom and prosperity. We didn’t realize we were balancing between two skyscrapers, where a storm was brewing.

There will be no ruins and war deaths in Ukraine to warn us of the fragility of our existence. The world already has enough worries. There is no end in sight to the coronavirus pandemic. The planet is getting warmer, with India reporting an unusual heatwave this spring, with temperatures exceeding 45 degrees. There’s no shortage of grim forecasts, and there’s also a security policy call for cassandra that goes beyond the Russo-Ukrainian war.
