Badminton News: Mixed doubles player Hoo Pang Ron is hoping to have a strong start to the new season with partner Teoh Mei Xing as they aim to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
But Hoo Pang Ron admitted it was a difficult task for him as he had to adapt to his new colleagues and train under new coach Nova Widianto.
Pang Ron, 24, partnered with Cheah Yee See for four years before linking up with Toh Ee Wei in June last year and climbing to No. 30 in the world rankings.
His partnership with Ee Wei did not last long as the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) decided to separate them and paired Pang Ron with Mei Xing in November.
World No. 158 Pang Ron/Mei Xing got off to a strong start as they qualified for the Bangladesh International Challenge semi-finals before claiming the Malaysian International Challenge title last month.
“It was difficult for me because I change partners three times a year. I had to adapt to their game and I had never teamed up with Mei Xing before,” he said.
“Mei Xing hasn’t played mixed doubles for a while, so she needs more time to adapt to the mixed doubles playing style to strengthen our partnership.”
“But it’s better because we’ve started to improve our training. There is still a lot to improve, but I hope we can participate in the Malaysian Open,” added Pang Ron.
Pang Ron/Mei Xing have qualified for the Malaysia Open from January 10-15 at Axiata Arena following the withdrawal of Ishaan Bhatnagar/Tanisha Crasto from India.
They will open their campaign against world number 13 Kyohei Yamashita-Naru Shinoya of Japan.
“Initially we thought we couldn’t qualify so I’m very happy to hear the news as the Malaysian Open is one of the tournaments that offers the most ranking points,” Pang Ron said. .
“They are higher ranked and we are the underdogs so there is no pressure on us but we will do our best to win.
“After the home tournament, we will analyze our game and correct our weaknesses before the next tournament,” added Pang Ron.
He is excited to train with Coach Nova and hopes to learn more from the two-time world champion.
“He (Nova) is a legend, we respect him and his style of training is comfortable for us. He was loud during practice, but after that we were able to laugh and eat together,” he said.
“Fighting to qualify for the Olympics is not easy, but there is still a chance. We will do our best and hopefully learn more from the coach and improve.”
Hoo Pang Ron/Mei Xing will compete in the India Open Super 750 from January 17-22 after home games.
