Assam Prime Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has called on Indian and American business leaders to join forces with his government and explore the opportunities his state offers, particularly in the areas of tea, trade and tourism.

At an event hosted by the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISP) in New Delhi on Tuesday night, Sarma also said the strategically located state is now “at the heart of the country” in terms of politics and development.

According to an official statement, the prime minister urged CEOs and heads of several companies in India and the US to work with Assam and seize the investment opportunity the state presents.

“Our inherent strengths – geographic, natural resources, flora and fauna, coupled with an enabling political push guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision have made Assam a powerhouse of opportunity. From tea to trade to tourism, we offer tremendous opportunities for business,” he said.

Outlining his vision at the interactive roundtable meeting, Sarma said the state government has worked tirelessly to create a resilient environment for investment through a series of policies.

The prime minister also welcomed investment in higher education.

Commenting on the progress made in Assam and the north-east region, he said: “If you look at politics and development, we are now in the heart of this country. So that’s the kind of difference Prime Minister Modi has brought.” Several CEOs have expressed keen interest in partnering with Assam in areas of higher education, skills development, connectivity, infrastructure and telecoms, the statement said.

Mukesh Aghi, President and CEO of the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum, reiterated that both India and the US have a desire to strengthen economic ties and strategic partnership at a time when India is celebrating its 75th anniversary.

BJP national vice-president and former MP Baijayant Jay Panda said Modi’s vision of making the Northeast passable has shown incredible progress in the region over the past eight years – be it in infrastructure or social indices – with Assam at the forefront and Sarma as chief minister.
