Badminton News: The Badminton Association of India (BAI) has announced the men's and women's teams for the upcoming BWF Thomas and Uber Cup 2024, to be played in Chengdu, China from April 27 to May 5.

The 10-member squad for the Thomas Cup will comprise five singles players, with Kiran George joining HS Prannoy, Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth and Priyanshu Rajawat, while Sai Pratheek will be the reserve doubles player for the first two-choice combination, namely the pair of world number 1 players, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty and MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila.

With most of the top players going through a tough Paris Olympic qualifying phase before the tournament, an additional singles player has been added to the team.

The squad was decided after an online meeting of the selection committee comprising national chief coach Pulella Gopichand, former India veteran U. Vimal Kumar, Jwala Gutta, Manjusha Kanwar, Partho Ganguly and Mallika Baruah Sarma.

The Indian men's team had created history two years ago in Thailand when they beat Indonesia 3-0 in the final to clinch the Thomas Cup crown for the first time.

For the Uber Cup, young people were given priority and PV Sindhu chose not to prepare for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

“The committee felt that we should add one more player in singles, while in doubles they selected the top two pairs and Sai Pratheek was chosen as an additional doubles player after consulting Mathias Boe (Danish doubles coach) just in case things went wrong and he was not up to the mark. He was healthy or needed to recover,” said Sanjay Mishra, secretary general of BAI.

Indian Thomas Cup Team:

Singles: HS Prannoy, Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, Priyanshu Rajawat and Kiran George

Doubles: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty, MR Arjun, Dhruv Kapila and Sai Pratheek

Uber Cup Team:

Singles: Anmol Kharb, Tanvi Sharma, Ashmita Chaliha and Isharani Baruah

Doubles: Shruti Mishra, Priya Konjengbam, Simran Singhi and Ritika Thaker
