Badminton News: Former world number 1 Kidambi Srikanth and southpaw Ashmita Chaliha have dominated the men’s singles and women’s singles events respectively for the upcoming Asian Games at the Jwala Gutta Badminton Academy in Hyderabad.
They were joined by PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy for the individual competition even as the selectors announced a 19-man squad for the continental event.

According to the selection trial format announced by the Badminton Association of India, three places in men’s and women’s singles as well as one in men’s and women’s doubles and two in mixed doubles were contested from trials, the best players in singles also having the chance to participate in the individual event which will be disputed after the team championships.
Srikanth and Ashmita won all three matches in Stage 2 to secure a place in the individual event.
2021 World Championships bronze medalist Lakshya Sen and National Champion Mithun Manjunath will complete the men’s singles roster in the team championships while Anupama Upadhyaya and Malvika Bansod will be the other singles players in the women’s team event.
The men’s doubles category is the most competitive match in the world rankings. 23 Dhruv Kapila / MR Arjun, Krishna Prasad G / Vishnuvardhan Goud P and new pair Suraj Goala and Pruthvi Roy K finished with two wins each with Kapila and Arjun making the team with the better game difference.
The experienced Ashwini Ponnappa and the promising Tanisha Crasto will form the second women’s doubles combination behind Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly.
Crasto will also play a mixed doubles match alongside Sai Pratheek K while Rohan Kapoor and N Sikki Reddy will be the second mixed doubles entry for India.
