Jakarta (ANTARA) – Google Maps has just launched its Street View service in India, in partnership with local companies for data collection.
The Indian government initially did not allow the service in the country for security reasons, Reuters reported citing local media.
The Indian Express page, quoted on Wednesday, reported that Google Maps Street View could be present as the country launched a national geospatial policy in 2021. Based on these rules, local companies can collect data and grant licenses to d other platforms.
Google works with local companies Tech Mahindra and Genesis International for Street View services. They run the Gullify project for Street View in 10 cities.
By the end of this year, they plan to feature 50 cities in India on Google Maps Street View. Within two years, they want to map 700,000 kilometers of Indian territory on the app.
Google had tried Street View in India, but it was discontinued in 2011 due to police protests. Local players including Wonobo and MapMyIndia offer the same service in the form of 360 degree panoramic mapping.
