Badminton News: Former two-time world junior champion Goh Jin Wei has decided to skip the Malaysia International Challenge in Ipoh this week to focus on his recovery.
Goh Jin Wei, 23, reached the quarter-finals of IC Bangladesh last week but was forced to drop out of his first match against India’s Ashmita Caliha, due to health reasons.
Jin Wei underwent surgery in 2019 for a colectomy and is yet to return to his best form.
His coach Nova Armada said he was happy with his slow but steady progress and didn’t want to push the Penang-born player too much.
In fact, the Indonesian tennis player wants Jin Wei to come back stronger, hopefully at the Super 1000 Malaysia Open from January 10-15 next year.
“He hasn’t fully recovered from IC Bangladesh so I think it’s best he rests for the rest of the year. I don’t want to force him. I hope he comes back stronger,” said Nova, who also coaches the independent men’s singles. Soong Joo Ven and Cheam June Wei at Sports Affairs Badminton Academy.
Jin Wei’s absence from IC Malaysia paved the way for 2019 Sea Games champion S Kisona to end the year strong.
Kisona, who has been criticized for failing to make a breakthrough in the past two years, is the second seed. He will open his campaign tomorrow against the playoffs.
Other prominent names in women’s singles are Siti Nurshuhaini Azman, Myisha Khairul, Tan Zhing Yi and K. Letshanaa.
